I’ve camped at Thayer 2 times the last being 7/23/22 and didn’t have any other people camping. For camping the main places are the American Alpine Club ($7/night non members, $5/night members) and Chestnut Creek ($10/night). I'd love to stay at a state park but you can't drink at them so that's Best campsite is Chestnut Creek Campground. In the busy season the sites do fill up, but they have a field or overflow.
